The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source Eric in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an FPGA Engineer.

Description:

We are looking for a self-starter with excellent technical skills to perform FPGA design and analysis engineering for instrumentation systems. This job requires strong analytical and technical abilities and demands fast, but carefully thought-out results. Strong technical ability and control of the work process from beginning to end is necessary within the given deadlines. The successful candidate will be part of a cross-disciplinary, multicultural-team, and will need to manage contributions of onsite and offsite staff and consultants

Main Responsibilities:

• Implement signal processing, communication, and data acquisition functions in FPGAs
• Participate in the integration of FPGA-based systems into the ESS distributed control system (based on the EPICS control system toolkit)
• As a member of the beam diagnostics team, contribute to the design, construction, installation, commissioning and operation of several instrumentation systems.

Key Qualifications

• M.S. in Electrical Engineering or a related field, plus 5 years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Significant experience in FPGA design for a high speed, complex digital communication and signal processing systems
• Expert level knowledge about FPGA design flow, design challenges
• Expert level proficiency in at least one HDL such as Verilog or VHDL
• Experience with XILINX FPGA vendor tools (Vivado HLS is required; ISE/PlanAhead is a plus)
• Strong knowledge of PCIe, Aurora, MicroBlaze, MIG Xilinx IP core and Kintex UltraScale architecture is required
• Thorough understanding of synchronous design practices and data flow management (FIFOs, memories, pipelining)
• Ability to debug timing closure or quality of results (QoR) issues in FPGAs, analyze STA reports, etc
• Experience specifying and debugging the interface between Linux device drivers and FPGA-based I/O components
• Knowledge of Matlab, SciPy/NumPy (or similar) and C/C++ for porting to HDL and implementing on FPGAs
• Strong knowledge of revision control concepts and tools (GIT based)
• Ability to lead a small team of engineers through the FPGA development process on-site and off-site is preferred
• Ability to teach, mentor and communicate technical concepts and solutions

Desired Qualifications

• PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field
• Experience in analog and mixed signal electronics as signal sources for digital signal processing systems
• Some previous experience in using Agile technologies is preferable
• Knowledge of scripting languages (Python, tcl/tk, etc...) is preferable

Personal Profile

• Proven written and oral communication skills
• Experience of working in an international environment
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite. Knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Duration & Location
This is a permanent position with six month probationary period. Your work place will be situated at Lund in Sweden.
