The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Detectors Technician position at the ESS Detector facilities in Lund.

Description of directorate/division/group

The Detector Group is part of the Instrument Technology Division under the Science Directorate. Our division provides the underlying technology required for the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at the ESS. Specifically, Detector Group is working with partners worldwide to provide novel neutron detectors, meeting challenging requirements with diverse technologies, many adopted from other disciplines.

Description of main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be an experienced Technician participating in the outsourcing, building and integration of detector prototypes and final detectors for instruments to be deployed at the ESS. The candidate will offer technical support to teams of Neutron Scientists and of Mechanical Engineers, and will work closely with other Technicians. The main working space is the detector facility (Utgård), and there will be specific jobs which will need to be done at the mechanical workshop (EMBLA) or at our Source Facility (SF, at Lund University). Utgård is a workshop space equipped to the highest standards to be utilized for building the ultimate neutron detector technologies. You might also be required to visit other collaborating partners and neutron centres, as necessary.

You will have varied, wide ranging responsibilities and duties that will include:

• Offering expert technical advice to Neutron Scientists and Mechanical Engineers when required.
• Handling the workshop equipment, including small soldering.
• Assembling and wiring.
• Involvement in the procurement of parts.
• Keeping stock control and inventory.
• Involvement in the R+D, testing and quality assurance process, as required.
• Maintaining the detector facilities ready for use.
• Ensuring the safety of these working spaces.
• Other workshop related tasks, including administrative aspects and documentation.

Qualifications

We are looking for a self-motivated person, with practical experience in technical workshops and, ideally, building demonstrators or similar devices. In particular, we are seeking knowledge, skills and competence on the following:

• Proven mechanical dexterity, able to manipulate precision jobs and to assemble complex parts.
• Practical experience with workshop equipment, including clean areas, cutting, and precision equipment, soldering, etc.
• Basic numeracy as required performing loading/cutting calculations.
• Wide-ranging experience of mechanical or electronic processes and practices is desirable.
• A good safety record, ideally with formal safety training applicable to workshop activities.
• Experience of working in an international research environment is essential.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Other requirements:

• A precise person, attentive to detail, striving for the upmost quality, always looking to refine methods and techniques to improve the deliverable.
• Able to multi-task and to work to deadlines.
• Able to adapt to new challenges and to develop novel solutions.
• Proven self-motivation and initiative as the facilities are located in a separate building to the main offices.
• Able to work unsupervised as part of a team project.
• Knowledge of safety policies to keep safe work spaces and ensuring that the users follow the safety regulations.
• Committed to working in a safe way and complying with all safety regulations and best practice.
• Ability to work on your own as well as to be a team player offering your technical advice when required.
• Understanding of vacuum systems and general applied physics would be an advantage.
• Willingness to expand theoretical as well as practical technical knowledge and aspects relevant to the scope of the detectors work package.

You must be flexible in your approach to work and prepared to tackle a very wide range of tasks in order to ensure successful and timely delivery. You must be a hands-on person, strongly motivated by the desire to deliver on time and determined to ensure the successful manufacturing of detector demonstrators. You must fit into our culture and share our values. We are looking for a reliable person who, working unsupervised, does so as a good team player understanding what is required from his/her job.

Duration & Location

This is a temporary 3-years position to start ASAP.
