ESS is looking for a Detector FPGA Engineer, a key role within our Detector Group. Beside the desk at ESS, the main working space is Utgård, the detector facility a short bike ride from our Campus. Utgård is a workshop space equipped to the highest standards to be utilized for building the ultimate neutron detector technologies.

About the team
The tasks and responsibilities of the Detector Group include:

• ensuring successful installation, commissioning and integration of detectors for all ESS neutron instruments.
• while a number of the neutron detectors are provided by our partner institutes, the group is responsible for design, development and production of some of the detectors based on new and innovative detection methods

About the role
As the successful candidate and future Detector FPGA Engineer you will participating in the outsourcing, building and integration of the electronics for the neutron detectors for instruments to be deployed at the ESS. The core task will include:

• ensure that the standardised electronics data acquisition is built and commissioned for the neutron detectors for ESS instruments.
• provision, integrate and adapt the front-end electronics. This includes a diverse fast FPGA-based data acquisition systems as well as all integration towards the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System software framework.

• Together with Detector Group stakeholders define requirements, design, develop, prototype, test and deliver firmware solutions for detector readout:

• Document and analyse stakeholder and internal requirements
• Participate in creating test and validation plans according to requirements
• Design firmware solutions and prepare for technical reviews
• Implement and realise the designed solution
• Establish and maintain software systems and other infrastructure required to perform FPGA firmware development and testing.
• Troubleshoot and optimize performance of existing solutions
• Drive test, validation procedures for the designed solution, maintain and support the delivered systems

• Interacting with Detector Electronics team and in-kind partners

• Develop strategy and architecture for detector readout at ESS
• Participate in follow-up on partner development activities
• Review and assess designs and documents from partner contributors
• Ensure a high-quality level of delivered contributions
• Maintain and support systems delivered by partners
• Participate in planning and reporting

• Reporting weekly progress/issues/next steps to work package managers

• Support work package and project managers with technical competence
• Assist work package activities and work package managers with Earned Value

About you
We believe that you are a self-motivated person, with practical experience in technical workshops and, ideally, building detector demonstrators or similar devices. For you to be successful in this role, we require that you have:

• Masters's degree in engineering, technology or science
• VHDL design for Xilinx Ultrascale+ and 7 Series FPGAs
• Proven experience using Multi-Gigabit Transceivers (specific experience with Xilinx GTY/GTX/GTPs)
• 5 years or more experience with firmware development
• 5 years or more experience with control system integration, preferably using EPICS
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
• Excellent oral and written English skills, including developing technical control system documentation in English

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probation period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
