hela Sverige The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Controls Linux System Administrator, to the Control System Infrastructure Group within the Integrated Controls Systems Division.
Description of division
You will join the Integrated Control System division, which is designing, constructing, commissioning and operating the control systems for the ESS facility. The Control system can be described as the "central nervous system" of the ESS facility that monitors and controls most of the operational aspects. We cover a wide range of sensing, control and automation technology from highly customized electronics specific for ESS applications to advanced software systems.
The Control System Infrastructure group designs, develops, commissions and operates the control system infrastructure. The scope of the group ranges from network and computing systems, data storage and the deployment of software & network services. This also includes some specialized infrastructural items such as the global ESS timing system and the ESS control room.
The controls system infrastructure scope contains of a mixture from entirely in-house developed solutions to procurement, construction, configuration and operation of industry standard systems for compute, data networks and storage.
Main responsibilities
• Assist in the design and implementation of IT solutions
• Recommend, evaluate, and pilot new tools; build prototypes, proof of concept, quality assurance, and production environments
• Review and document the functionality of existing environments while proposing enhancements and upgrades
• Assist in the creation of test plans, installation guides, technical specifications, white papers, and best practice documentation
• Work with databases and scale-out storage systems based on Ceph and Gluster
• Script and automate routine tasks and procedures using configuration management tools based on Ansible and AWX framework
• Work with servers and spare parts inventory
• Advise and support other members of the ESS project in Linux console and storage related tasks
Qualifications
• Bachelor degree in electrical engineering, computer science or equivalent experience
• Minimum of 3 years Unix/Linux administration experience
• Good PHP or Python scripting skills is required
• Familiarity with automation and configuration management engines/tools
• Familiarity with LDAP, Linux authentication, DNS and DHCP services
• Familiarity with Linux and Windows operating systems
• Familiarity with x86 64bit server hardware (IPMI, Idrac, ILO, etc)
• Experience with key DevOps practives (Infrastructure as Code
The following experiences are considered as beneficial
• Previous work experience within scientific/academic environments
• Previous experience from a green field project
To be successful and perform well in this position you have the ability to effectively prioritize your work and manage multiple daily tasks. You also have the ability to pay attention to detail and can easily adapt to a multi-cultural team environment. You have the ability to teach, mentor, communicate to the point, and defend technical concepts and solutions. You know how to communicate effectively in English, and knowledge of another European language is advantageous.
Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
