The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Coatings Engineer position in the Instrument Technology Division. The open position is placed in Linköping, Sweden.

Description of division

The Detector Group is part of the Instrument Technology Division under the Science Directorate. Our division provides the underlying technology required for the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at the ESS. Specifically, the Detector Group is working with partners worldwide to provide novel neutron detectors, meeting challenging requirements with diverse technologies, many adopted from other disciplines.

Description of main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be a Coatings Engineer within the Neutronic Detector Coatings Section that belongs to the Detector Group.
The section is situated at the ESS Detector Coatings Workshop in Linköping where thin converter layers for the novel neutron detectors needed for ESS is deposited. As such the primary work area will be operation of the thin-film deposition equipment. The coatings engineer will be doing day-to-day running of the lab, that can include work tasks such as production of thin films for both prototyping and construction of detectors, quality control, bookkeeping, and helping out with continues improvements.

Qualifications

• Relevant PhD (Thin Film/ Material Science) or similar
• Background and experience in Material Science
• Active direct practical experience in thin film deposition using a sputtering system
• Experience in diagnostic and interrogative techniques for materials investigation
• Service minded and a mindset for a production environment
• Experience working with the material B4C is helpful

The successful candidate must be able to work well both independently and in a team. The team is small and it is thus of importance to take initiative and provide a helping hand in all aspects of the day-to-day work at the lab. Social skills are necessary, and your personal qualities will have impact as a selection criteria.

Experience of working in an international environment is preferable and excellent oral and written English skills is a must.

Duration & Location

The position is a fixed term position of 2 years. Your work place will be situated in Linköping, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
