We're recruiting a talented and motivated Chemistry, Manufacturing and Control (CMC) Project Lead to join Pharmaceutical Sciences at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Pharmaceutical Sciences is a department within our Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED) Biotech unit. The vision for Pharmaceutical Sciences is to deliver the therapies of the future through scientific leadership in drug delivery, design of synthetic routes and manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API). Our portfolio of projects span traditional small molecules, proteins, oligonucleotides to RNA based therapeutics across AstraZeneca's therapy areas.

As CMC Project Lead you will play a critical role in the development of AstraZeneca's products within therapy areas Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease (CVMD) and Respiratory Inflammation and Autoimmunity (RIA). Blending a holistic view of CMC activities with insight into wider IMED scientific activities you will deliver innovative and differentiated strategies that balance scientific risks against return on investment. You will use your experience of developing products for both CVMD and RIA to provide innovative, creative solutions to ensure projects progress with pace and avoid unnecessary delays. You will face a diverse range of challenges and opportunities which require insightful analysis, conceptual thought and strategic vision to deliver creative, flexible, and cost-effective drug delivery solutions which leverage internal and external capabilities. To succeed you will therefore need a sound understanding of the external CMC technology landscape, internal and external supply chains, and considerable business acumen.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As CMC project lead you will be accountable for leadership, strategy & planning, delivery and budget management of the CMC contribution to a small portfolio of 2-6 projects. You will lead and direct your Project Teams, ensuring each project efficiently develops towards proof of concept stage whilst maintaining the highest quality and balancing risks against return on investment. Your responsibilities includes:
• Overall accountability for defining and delivering the CMC project strategy that facilitates an optimal and integrated Pharmaceutical Development contribution to global drug projects.
• Accountable to the innovative Project Team (iPT) for maintaining, delivering and reporting on all aspects of the CMC plan including control of the scope, timing, cost, quality and risk.
• Identifying CMC related issues and risks, and associated solutions and opportunities to the iPT Project Leader, Head of Pharmaceutical Sciences and other relevant parts of the organization.
• All aspects of CMC project team leadership; from the extended team structure and organisation within Pharmaceutical Sciences, to team dynamics.
• Direct, inspire and empower Pharmaceutical Sciences project teams, providing focus and direction to team members and the wider Pharmaceutical Sciences organisation.
• Act as an external ambassador for Pharmaceutical Sciences.
• Representing Pharmaceutical Sciences on the evaluation of external project opportunities.

Essential Requirements
• A pharmaceutically relevant degree with at least 3 years' experience in the development of products.
• Broad experience of the early development of respiratory, oral or parenteral dosage forms.
• Significant experience of working within a CMC organisation, and insight into how CMC contributes to the wider medicines development process.
• Global drug development experience.
• Experience of project management in a large, complex business.
• Proven track record in all aspects of creating and leading large, multi-disciplinary project teams that are engaged and high performing.
• Strong leadership, coaching and mentoring skills.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to set clear direction and objectives for the team.
• Ability to analyse and interpret complex situations and provide clear strategic directions for others.
• Strong business acumen and creative problem-solving capabilities.
• Results-focus and ability to deliver projects through strategic influence and relationship management versus direct line management.
• Effective professional networker.
• Credibility and skills to be able to influence senior stakeholders to contribute to AstraZeneca's overall project strategies.
• Excellent negotiation, collaboration stakeholder management skills.

Desirable Requirements
• Experience both in respiratory as well as biologics or other related macromolecules.
• Experience of leading international projects involving external partners.
• Experience of leading pre-proof of concept stage projects.
