The Calculation Engineers at Engine Development uses simulation software for calculating and evaluating different aspects of the engine to obtain excellent durability and performance. Simulation is key to shortening development lead times in product development projects as well as exploring new concepts in the early stages of development.

As a calculation engineer at Scania R&D, you can either work with solid mechanics (FEM) or fluid dynamics (CFD). As a FEM engineer, you will calculate the mechanical integrity of dynamic systems with the help of the finite element method. The CFD engineer simulates flows and heat transfer phenomena in cooling, lubrication, gas exchange, and combustion.

The engine is a goody bag full of exciting and complex phenomena to simulate; thus this is an exciting job where you can develop and expand your expertise. As the engine gets increasingly complex when technology evolves to achieve higher efficiency and lower emissions the need for the development of new methods drives us to build competence and explore the boundaries of our simulation tools.

In your daily work you will:

• Correlate your results to physical tests and measurements. Your conclusions give advice and directions to the team.
• Through your expertise and competence, help and guide the designers from an early stage in the design process until product release.
• Share your results and analyses both orally and in written reports
• Contribute to the work of development of calculation methods with the help of new usage of software and/or test data to improve efficiency and accuracy.
• Evaluate new information, processes, and education within the discipline, to be able to improve the best-practice currently employed at Scania.

Background and attributes

Calculation engineers should not only possess technical expertise but also a good command of the common simulation and 3D visualization software. The work is conducted in close contact with colleagues within testing and design, software vendors, component suppliers, and customers. Simulations integrated into the design process increase the knowledge of the whole organization and provide a basis for decisions; thus an important part of the job is documenting, reporting, and communicating results to key stakeholders.

Flexibility and a structured way of working belong to the soft skills calculation engineers should have, as well as a focus on customer needs and value creation.

We believe you have the following profile:

• MSc in Engineering, graduate engineer, upper secondary engineer course or equivalent
• Good problem-solving skills based on an analytical way of thinking
• Genuine interest in mechanical design/calculation
• Good communication skills
• Responsive and customer-focused
• Identifies complex connections to resolve problems in collaboration with others

Professional development

As a Calculation Engineer, you will be constantly evolving alongside the company and our products. For example, you can raise your skill level via Development Path - Engineer, which will enable you to strengthen your skills within existing areas of expertise. The development of new products is largely based on balancing various interests to produce the optimum solution for Scania. This job is performed in an inspiring and stimulating work environment. The role provides an excellent foundation for expanding your skillset or developing to other roles within R&D or the rest of Scania.
