Volvo Cars Propulsion Power System Development is responsible for the development of combustion engines and electrical motors in Volvo car vehicles. The section Analysis and Verification is responsible for Propulsion Power System CAE activities as well as functional and durability testing.



Engine CAE Solids is responsible for advanced technical calculations within the area of Structural analysis (FEM), Power train dynamics and different types of mechanical analysis on the sub systems.

Analyses are performed on different system levels such as complete powertrain, complete engine/electrical motor and sub systems and components with the overall purpose of developing attributes, dimensioning components and virtually verify different technical solutions.



The position CAE Engineer, Crank system and engine friction involves a number of work tasks, which you can read bellow.



Main responsibilities and qualities needed for the role:



Firstly, you will perform calculation-based analyses of the complete engine mechanical friction. The base of this work is to use a 1-dimensional mechanical model of the engine. Supporting analyses such as detailed bearing analysis could as well be a part of the work scope.



Another topic is to perform quality studies of oil film thickness of the crankshaft bearings including crankshaft counter weight optimization.



One area that is included in the job position is to take part in specific CAE studies of the piston skirt friction and piston secondary motion using detailed modelling.



You will both use available CAE methods as well as perform method development work. This development aims at both improving existing methods as well as, when needed, develop new CAE tools.



The work is carried out in cooperation with designers, test engineers and other CAE engineers. You will take active part in ongoing projects both in early development phases as well as later industrialization. You will report to the Project leaders and Group manager.



The role will give you the possibility to develop expert skills within the area of mechanical friction and crank system dynamics and give the opportunity to influence critical attributes of the engine such as fuel economy and performance.



Required qualifications


* M.Sc. or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering with focus on machine dynamics and tribology
* Knlowledge of machine dynamics
* Solid knowledge of tribology applied to rotating machines
* Well-developed skills in advanced computer aided analysis
* Experience or knowledge of combustion engines
* Experience of calculation based work within the specific area, engine crank system dynamics and tribology using state of the art computer tools are meritorious
* Experience of using 1-dimensional computer tools such as GT-Suite on engines is a merit
* Fluent in English, written and spoken
* Driver's license "B"
