Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre
The centre was established in 1988 and has today around 45 employees and carries out research, teaching and dissemination of information on forest management. The research is focused on subjects particularly relevant to southern Sweden, in the fields of silviculture, forest planning/policy, tropical forestry, forests conservation and forest history. The research is carried out in close co-operation with the forest sector in the region. The main part of teaching is done within the Euroforester Masters Programme for students in forestry, agriculture, biology and landscape scape planning. The course language is English, and more than half of the students come from outside Sweden.

Research area:
The research area is forest management planning and modelling with a particular focus on private forestry dominated landscapes. In southern Sweden majority of forests are owned by private owners. This poses multiple specific challenges and problems for forest planning in the region, in particular regarding modern decision support systems which have not been fully realized in private forestry.

Assignments:
The appointed person is expected to participate in multidisciplinary research projects that require expertise in forest decision support tools and modelling. The appointed person is also expected to teach in the course "Planning in Sustainable Forest Management" within the Euroforester Master program, and to develop the course content in line with the contemporary demands of the field and the international profile of the program.

Competence:
The applicant shall hold a PhD in forest management or having an equivalent scientific competence. Priority shall be given to candidates who received their PhD no longer than seven years prior to the application deadline. Applicants must be scientifically proficient in the subject area for the position. Experience in research environments corresponding to one or more postdoctoral positions, or a Phd from another institution than SLU is an advantage.

Specific competence demands:
Excellent written and spoken English is required.

Assessment criteria:
On consideration for the appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer, emphasis is primarily put on indicators of the applicant's academic and pedagogic skills, as well as the ability to communicate with stakeholders. The assessment will include an evaluation of the applicant's demonstrated ability to develop an independent line of research within the research field and to meet the requirements for promotion to Senior Lecturer in the context of the employment qualifications.

Specific assessment criteria:
Particular emphasis will be placed on the applicant's experience and competence in the field. Demonstrated experience in forestry decision support systems and programming skills in MATLAB and R languages is a demand. The individual appointed is expected to be able to communicate with colleagues and stakeholders in Swedish within two years. It is a strong advantage if the candidate has a good understanding of research internationally in the field and that she/he also has international contacts in the same field. It is also important that the candidate has, or can develop, a strong network in the forest sector in the region - that she/he can serve as a link between the sector and academia. Therefore, it is considered as an advantage if the applicant has good knowledge of the Scandinavian forest management systems.

Place of work:
Alnarp

Form of employment:
Employment is for a limited period of time (4 years) in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance. The appointment is a qualifying position and the first step in an academic career at SLU. An Associate Senior Lecturer is entitled during the employment period to apply for review for promotion to Senior Lecturer based on criteria established in conjunction with the announcement of the position of Associate Senior Lecturer.
