We are looking for an Aviculturist and Monitoring Officer to join the Southern dunlin project team to assist in the implementation of a headstarting programme for southern dunlins. Southern dunlin project is a four-year project that is aiming to secure the future of breeding southern dunlins in Sweden through habitat restoration and management, supplementing the population through headstarting, and raising awarness. Headstarting refers to the bringing of wild laid eggs in to captivity where they can be hatched and raised in relative safety and later released back in to the wild, in order to boost population numbers.
Southern Dunlin Project is a partnership between Nordens Ark and BirdLife Sweden with funding from the Swedish postcode lottery.
About the job:
This is a hybrid role covering both avicultural and monitoring aspects of the project. Most of the work between April and mid-June will involve avicultural duties and during the end of June the primary focus will be on monitoring work. Working alongside a passionate and friendly team, specific tasks will include:
• Assisting with the setup and preparation of temporary facilities required for the successful incubation, hatching and rearing of southern dunlins.
• Maintaining indoor facilities and outdoor aviaries and their associated equipment required for the successful incubation, hatching and rearing of southern dunlins, to the agreed standards.
• Assisting with activities related to the incubation of southern dunlin eggs, as required and under the supervision of Nordens Ark aviculturists.
• Carrying out feeding and monitoring of chicks in accordance with strict protocols.
• Being responsible for the rigorous collection of data on eggs and chicks as well as environmental conditions and husbandry activities using paper and electronic record-keeping systems.
• Upholding rigorous biosecurity standards to ensure the health and safety of humans, eggs and birds, at all times.
• Completing a program of post-release monitoring of headstarted birds, independently and with minimal supervision.
• Systematically storing data collected during post-release monitoring, and entering it into databases in an organised and timely fashion.
• Collating and reviewing data for reporting and assisting with the production of post-season reports.

This post is based on the island of Öland. The position will require a flexible working pattern of five days out of seven, and will regularly require working during weekends, public holidays, and evenings, to meet the requirements of the post.

What type of applicant are we looking for?
Candidates must have experience of working with birds, passionate about wetland wildlife conservation and the ability to work effectively within an ambitious team.
The successful candidate will have a positive, 'can do' attitude and the ability to work independently, using their initiative when required, as well as in an ambitious, self-less team.
This is fixed term contract for 3 months
