The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.

Stroke is a common disease and approximately 25,000 people suffer a stroke each year in Sweden. Stroke is the most common cause of disability in adults. There are different types of stroke and an important goal for our group is to increase knowledge about the origin and disease mechanisms in these subtypes. Another goal is to increase knowledge of factors of importance for recovery and prognosis. We recruit stroke cohorts locally and collaborate internationally. We examine levels of substances in the blood (biomarkers) to search for molecular patterns for different stroke types and search for biomarkers that can predict different outcomes after stroke. The long-term goal is to contribute to the development of precision medicine for stroke, ie. so that each patient receives the right treatment at the right time. We are now recruiting an enthusiastic associate researcher who has a genuine interest to join our team and contribute to our research.

Duties
The research group is looking for an assistant researcher who will work on two ongoing stroke research projects: the Sahlgrenska Academy Study on Ischemic Stroke (SAHLSIS) and FIND Stroke Recovery. The work involves documentation, quality assurance of data and assisting the team with simple tasks (eg responsible for handling research forms and purchasing chemicals). Your main tasks will include data processing (e.g. protein and DNA biomarkers and clinical variables), statistical analyses and reporting. It will also involve contact with various actors within the projects (e.g. research nurses and collaborators in Sweden and abroad). The work is conducted independently and in groups under the leadership of research group leader Christina Jern and assistant group leader Tara Stanne. The working languages are both Swedish and English.

Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate with a Master's degree (or equivalent university studies) in biology, biomedicine, biotechnology, statistics, bioinformatics or other relevant education from an accredited university. We are looking for a candidate who has experience working with smaller and larger scale data to work on multiple research projects. You should be interested in research and in the development of precision medicine. You should have very good organizational skills, attention to detail, and be responsible. Independence and a good ability to work in a group is a prerequisite. The position requires very good computer skills. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word, as well as some statistics program such as SPSS is a requirement. Experience of, and interest in, programming languages such as R or Python, and previous experience in handling large amounts of data is a clear merit. Previous research experience and with processing of personal data is an advantage. Applicants must be proficient in written and spoken Swedish and English. We attach great importance to personal suitability, such as accuracy, responsibility and being solution oriented.

Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, two years, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
