AstraZeneca R&D, IMED, Gothenburg, Sweden seek to recruit an Associated Principal Scientist, New Modalities Chemistry in the area of Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity (RIA).

Mission

AstraZeneca is committed to the development of the next generation innovative respiratory medicines. The New Modalities Chemistry team in RIA leads the efforts focused on expanding the use of novel peptide and oligonucleotide based modalities and molecular conjugates in the treatment of respiratory diseases. The New Modalities team achieves this in close collaboration with scientists in the Chemistry, Bioscience, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Science departments - all joined by the goal to discover the respiratory medicines of the future.

Job description

As an Associate Principal Scientist in the New Modalities team you are part of a team of scientists focused on the discovery of peptide and/or oligonucleotide based drugs. As a RIA authority in the field the Associated Principal Scientist makes significant contributions to the peptide or oligonucleotide chemistry efforts in specific RIA projects, including management of external resources and collaborations. The candidate is expected to lead form the bench, directly influencing the design of novel chemical entities, by highlighting opportunities created by recent scientific progress in peptide or oligonucleotide chemistry. The role of Associated Principal Scientist includes acting as a chemistry leader in RIA new modality based projects, and to provide expert advice in the interpretation of complex data. The candidate is expected to have excellent interpersonal skills necessary for working in a multidisciplinary environment and to mentor less experienced colleagues.

The jobholder has an excellent scientific background with strong written and oral communication skills. In addition, an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a proactive attitude and a clear delivery focus.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Lead peptide/oligonucleotide based chemistry efforts in individual project teams at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department; this may also include managing external resources
* Actively impact the RIA projects to ensure that state of the art synthetic peptide/ oligonucleotide chemistry methodology and design approaches are being used to meet project objectives
* Proactively and visibly influence peptide/oligonucleotide drug discovery efforts in individual projects, role-modelled by own experimental work
* Drive RIA IMED scientific reputation by identifying and progressing publication opportunities internally, across AZ and/or together with external partners.

Essential Requirements

* PhD in (bio-)/organic chemistry or corresponding experience in a relevant field focused on peptide or oligonucleotide chemistry; post-doctoral experience is a plus.
* In-depth knowledge of recent developments in the area of peptide/oligonucleotide chemistry
* Familiar with scientific developments relevant to peptide/oligonucleotide based drug discovery
