Are you an expert in Computational Pharmaceutics with experience in modelling within the areas of either Biopharmaceuticals or Solid State and Material Properties? Would you like to apply your expertise in a company that are following the science and turn ideas into life changing medicines? Then you might be the one we are looking for!

AstraZeneca is now recruiting two Associate Principal Scientists with speciality in Computational Pharmaceutics to join the Early Product Development (EPD) function within Pharmaceutical Sciences at AstraZeneca. One role focuses on Biopharmaceuticals and is placed in Gothenburg (Sweden). The other role focuses on Solid state and material properties and could be placed either in Gothenburg (Sweden), Macclesfield (UK) or Cambridge (UK).

Pharmaceutical Sciences is a department within our Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED) Biotech unit. The Pharmaceutical Sciences' mission is to transform molecules into investigational medicines, meeting the unmet needs of future patients. Our portfolio of projects spans traditional small molecules, proteins, oligonucleotides to RNA based therapeutics across AstraZeneca's therapy areas. Pharmaceutical Science at AstraZeneca is aiming to strengthen the modelling and simulation capability.

As an associate principal scientist in Computational Pharmaceutics, you will be part of EPD to lead scientific development in one of following modelling areas.

* Biopharmaceutical: Modelling of distribution, dissolution and absorption of drug compounds and formulated products. This role is focused on modelling of inhaled emergent products for new modalities. The role is placed in Gothenburg, Sweden.
* Solid state and material properties: Prediction of crystal structures, exploring polymorph landscape, prediction of morphology, crystal growth and crystallization conditions, prediction of mechanical properties and surface-surface/surface-particle interactions and aiding selection of co-formers through modelling. The role is placed either in Gothenburg (Sweden), Cambridge (UK) or Macclesfield (UK).

Main Duties and Responsibilities

In these roles, you will work across all the Global Pharmaceutical Sciences departments along with other senior scientists to provide scientific leadership and drive innovation. You will be responsible for developing and apply modelling approaches to identify opportunities and address challenges in developing of compounds and products in alignment with the overall Pharmaceutical Sciences strategy. Specific responsibilities include:

* Deliver high quality modelling to drug projects and scientific excellence in the discipline in particular at compound selection for candidate drugs and early development
* Represent Pharmaceutical Sciences modelling and simulation externally to drive scientific excellence and AstraZeneca's reputation in the field
* Identify and explore new opportunities for computational support to the drug discovery and development process
* Identify opportunities for external scientific collaborations and lead collaboration projects
* Work across disciplines and skill groups within and outside Pharmaceutical Sciences
* Act as a role model and mentor to scientists with less experience in modelling and simulation
* Drive innovation in the modelling and simulation arena

Requirements

* PhD in a relevant area e.g. computational chemistry, physical chemistry, mathematical and statistical modelling, computational materials science, typically with +5 years post-doctoral experience
* Excellent awareness of recent literature within field of expertise
* Good knowledge of programming and scripting
* Good understanding of pharmaceutical R&D and the wider business
* God knowledge of all disciplines within early product development and drug discovery
* Good track record of professional achievement and recognition in own field
* Experience from leading scientific collaboration between industry and academia
* Able to think beyond boundaries of own job, challenging status quo and seeking opportunities for business improvement
* Excellent team working, networking, communication and influencing skills

Specific technical requirements

Biopharmaceutics:

* Experience from modelling tools like Matlab, Gastroplus, Simcyp, Berkeley Madonna
* Programming: visual basic/visual C, Fortran
* Desirable: Knowledge of inhaled drug delivery, respiratory diseases and new modalities

Solid-state and material properties:

* Experience from modelling tools like MaterialsStudio, VASP, Schrodinger suite, Gaussian, GRACE, Gromacs
* Programming: python, shell scrip
