The School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg
The School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg produces top-quality research, teaching, and public engagement on today's key global challenges. The staff of over 100 faculty and PhD researchers examines global questions and their governance in disciplines and areas such as peace and security, international relations, development studies, anthropology, regional studies, cultural heritage, environmental studies, gender, human rights, and migration. The School's work is highly international, cross-disciplinary, and policy-relevant.

Project Description
The project 'Legitimacy outside the State: Governing the Global Internet' runs for three years 2018-20 with funding from the Swedish Research Council. It examines the workings of legitimacy in private global governance, using as a case study the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

More specifically, the research investigates: (a) how much legitimacy private global governance attracts; (b) the sources of that legitimacy; (c) the processes that generate legitimation of nonstate governance of global concerns; and (d) the consequences that having or lacking legitimacy has for the operation of private global governance.
These questions are explored through the case of ICANN, a pivotal regulatory body for the global Internet and one of the furthest developed arrangements of private authority in world politics. Unique access to ICANN policy circles is used to conduct an elite survey of 300 respondents, generating rich qualitative and quantitative data for the first comprehensive and systematic analysis of legitimacy in private global governance. The project is closely aligned with a concurrent six-year research programme on Legitimacy in Global Governance (LegGov), with fifteen researchers at the Universities of Gothenburg, Lund and Stockholm.

Job particulars
The assistant researcher tasks will include: (1) helping to prepare a survey interview questionnaire and a list of 300 respondents; (2) conducting field interviews at three ICANN meetings, most likely in Panama City, Barcelona and Kobe, as well as some Skype/telephone interviews between these meetings; and (3) contributing to the data processing.

Qualifications
Applicants are expected to hold a Master's degree from Sweden or an equivalent degree from another country by the date of the application deadline.
Applicants are expected to have a: (a) theoretical and empirical knowledge of global governance; (b) experience in field research, including interviewing skills; (d) full fluency in spoken and written English; (e) capacity to work in a research team.

The position is a fix-term position for 14 month, 20% of fulltime. The preferred start date is 1 February 2018, or later per agreement.
