Chalmers University of Technology is recruiting a tenure-track Assistant Professor or an Associate professor within Computer Vision/Machine Learning. This position is an excellent opportunity to perform research at the international forefront where we value a good and inclusive working environment. Being at one of the top universities in Sweden, you will have the possibility to recruit outstanding PhD students and postdocs, and to establish your own research group.

The department and the research group
The Department of Electrical Engineering is characterized by a dynamic and international work environment with about 220 employees from more than 20 countries, with extensive national and international research collaborations with academia, industry and society. The department provides about 100 courses, including undergraduate courses in Computer Vision, Image Analysis and Deep Machine Learning.

The Computer Vision Group at the division of Signal processing and Biomedical Engineering conducts research in the field of automatic image interpretation and perceptual scene understanding. The group targets both medical applications, such as the development of new and more effective methods and systems for analysis, support and diagnostics, as well as general computer vision applications including autonomously guided vehicles (particularly self-driving cars), image-based localization, structure-from-motion and object recognition. The main research problems include mathematical theory, algorithms and machine learning (deep learning) for inverse problems in artificial intelligence.

In our research group we value a good and inclusive working environment.

Major responsibilities
Our focus is on basic science in the field of computer vision and related areas including geometric deep learning, pattern recognition and medical image analysis. The main responsibility of this position is leading research and development of novel and theoretically justified algorithms relevant to basic key problems in the research area. Target applications include image localization, registration, stereo and autonomous navigation, but the research should also envision new applications arising from general scene understanding and three-dimensional generative models. Machine learning has become an indepensible tool in this regard with the development of methods utilizing equivariant neural networks, neural radiance fields and diffusion models.

Other important duties include teaching and supervision of PhD students and MSc students. A large part of our research funding comes from national and international funding agencies such as the Swedish Research Council and the European Research Council. Therefore it is expected that you will apply for means to finance new PhD students and postdocs, sometimes in collaboration with others and sometimes independently.

Your profile
We are looking for an energetic researcher capable of performing research at the international forefront. The ideal candidate has experience in developing new machine learning methods for general visual scene understanding and is proficient in generative models. You are a good colleague who values teamwork and enjoys working in a collaborative environment.

For this position, we would like you to have:

• A PhD degree in Computer Vision or equivalent. For an assistant professor position, the doctoral degree should not be older than 7 years prior to the application deadline. Exceptions can be made for longer periods resulting from documented parental leave, sick leave or military service*.
• An independent and internationally recognized line of research within the field.
• The ability to supervise PhD students and teach in the undergraduate and graduate curriculum at the Department of Electrical Engineering.
• Have published in the major scientific journals within the field and have presented your research at the main international conferences, especially ICCV, ECCV, CVPR, MICCAI, ICML and/or NeurIPS.
• Experience of state-of-the-art machine learning methods.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level within a few years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

• The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree.

Contract terms
The position is aimed for Assistant professor or Associate professor level. Associate professor at Chalmers is a permanent faculty position. The appointment as Assistant professor is a four-year, entry-level, faculty position with tenure track, whereby you will acquire both pedagogical and research qualifications. An Assistant professor is expected to improve their ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop their skills in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate professor within four years and, if successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers.

The level of the position will be decided based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. For a definition of the academic level and qualifications for the two positions, please consult our Rules of Procedure - Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty (Assistant professor chapter 6.4; Associate professor chapter 6.3). Your qualifications and academic level will be evaluated by the department, Chalmers Faculty Appointment Committee and external evaluators.
