The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.



Unit
The research at the Unit of Epidemiology is focused on advancing knowledge about disease etiology and prognosis with an emphasis on environmental and lifestyle factors, and on methodological development and stringency.

The research is based on large register based cohorts, as well as cohorts and case-control studies with extensive information from questionnaires and biological samples.

Duties
The Assistant Professor is expected to conduct epidemiologic research in cancer epidemiology, focused on childhood cancer and nervous system tumors in adults. The Assistant Professor is also expected to supervise PhD students, and to take responsibility for teaching epidemiological theory and methods both at the Master level and at the Doctoral program in Epidemiology.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Assistant professor if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be the ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period.

Bases of assessment
We stress scientific expertise and pedagogic experience when assessing applicants. We see that the candidate has following qualifications:

- A PhD in medical science in the area of epidemiology
- Education in biostatistics
- Substantial experience in register based epidemiologic research
- Experience in cancer epidemiology
- Substantial experience in handling large databases, including health data registers and population registers
- Experience with writing scientific papers and grant applications
- Experience with collaborative projects and working with national and international collaborators
- Experience in teaching epidemiological methods and supervision of PhD students

Other meritorious competences are experience in the area of childhood cancer and nervous system tumors, advanced experience with both the statistical software SAS and Stata and experience as course director at master or PhD level.

The applicant will need to feel comfortable with working in teams and demonstrate good interpersonal skills but also be independent enough to formulate new hypotheses and critically examine the results.

An Assistant professor position is a fixed-term position. The first employment should be two years, with a possible extension of two years after evaluation.
