Students can be admitted to 1-3 positions associated with one of two programmes. The first is the Varieties of Democracy research programme and students admitted in this programme will be situated in the V-Dem Institute, Department of Political Science headed by Professor Staffan I. Lindberg who is also co-Principal Investigator for the V-Dem project. A description of the research programme can be downloaded from: http://www.pol.gu.se/english/varieties-of-democracy--v-dem-/.
See also: http://v-dem.net

The second programme is the Programme on Governance and Local Development at Gothenburg (GLD-G). This programme, headed by Professor Ellen Lust, aims to explain variation in governance and local development in an effort to promote human welfare globally. It seeks to develop insights into the role of state and non-state actors, to consider the relationship between local level factors (e.g., poverty, gender relations, elite dynamics, ethnic diversity, etc.) and governance, and to provide policy-relevant findings based on scientifically rigorous research. See: http://gld.gu.se

We will admit and fund one to three well-qualified and highly motivated students to work on issues covered by these programmes. We are particularly interested in candidates who have a record of accomplishments in one or more of the following areas:
(1) comparative democratization (e.g., sequencing in democratization, democracy and development, democracy and governance/corruption, elections and democratization, or other areas),
(2) governance and development (e.g., service provision, non-state governance, local-national relations, etc.);
We are also particularly interested in candidates who have
(1) regional expertise, most importantly from the MENA, Africa and/or other regions and/or
(2) research methods (e.g., aggregation, IRT-modeling, experiments, expert coding in data collection, causal inference in time series analysis, sequencing algorithms, survey methodology or related methods).

The present positions are funded by a grant from the Swedish Research Council for the recruitment of Professor Ellen Lust from Yale University. The admitted students are thus supposed to write their doctoral thesis within the relevant programme, either V-Dem or GLD-G, and they should participate in the programme's activities. Candidates should state clearly in the application which of the two programmes s/he would be interested in joining. The working language for both programs is English. Hence, the application (including writing sample) should be in English.

The aim of the doctoral programme is for students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to conduct research autonomously within political science and to contribute to the development of knowledge within the discipline with a doctoral thesis. Another aim is for doctoral students to develop an ability to later apply the acquired knowledge and skills within post-degree research or other professional work.

Admission to the doctoral programme at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, comes with a 4-year salaried position on a fulltime, residential basis, with the possibility of extension for a fifth year if the student completes a minimum of 20 percent teaching/other duties during the first four years. Students get office space, computer, and office phone and access to all standard services in the department.

To be eligible for the position, the applicant must meet both general and specific entry requirements. An applicant meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle (PhD) studies if he/she has obtained (Higher Education Ordinance Ch.7, Sec.39):

1. a degree at the second-cycle level (MA-level or equivalent),
2. at least 240 higher education (university) credits, of which at least 60 must be at the second-cycle level, or
3. largely equivalent knowledge in other ways in Sweden or abroad. In Sweden, 240 university credits equals four years of completed full-time studies.

An applicant meets the specific entry requirements for doctoral (PhD) studies if he/she has at least 60 university credits in political science or has equivalent qualifications.

Applicants who have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad will also be considered to meet the specific entry requirements. (60 university credits correspond to one year of completed full-time studies.) For more information see the doctoral programme's general syllabus: http://pol.gu.se/english/education/ph.d.-programme

Finally, although not a formal requirement, we encourage successful applicants to acquire sufficient competency in the Swedish language to be able to actively participate in seminars and other activities at the Department, within a two-year period.

The Department of Political Science is an open and engaged department, in the middle of the city and at the centre of the debate. The Department has about 140 employees, with more than 80 researchers, teachers and doctoral (PhD) students. The research at the Department focus on central areas of political science, such as voters and elections, political institutions, environmental politics and international politics, European politics, environmental politics and political ideas. Research programmes and collaboration projects at the Department include the Swedish National Election Studies Programme, Quality of Government Institute (QoG), Multidisciplinary Research on Democracy (MOD), Centre for Collective Action Research (CeCAR), Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Governance and Local Development at Gothenburg (GLD-G) and the Centre for European Research (CERGU).
