The PhD project will be placed at Pharmaceutical Technology, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, with Anette Larsson as main supervisor and Niklas Lorén, SIK, as co-supervisor. Part of the work will be performed at SIK, The Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology in Gothenburg.
The pharmaceutical technology group at Chalmers is focused in designing biomaterials for improving health. One important design parameter is the mass transport, which is directly correlated to the drug release rate. The group has also a focus on relating biomaterial's structures to its properties, where knowing about these things will improve the design of new products based on biomaterials. Our research is close connected to SuMo BIOMATERIALS, a VINNOVA excellent center: http://www.chalmers.se/chem/sumo-en/sumo-biomaterials
Job description
Interfaces are occurring almost everywhere around us, e.g. in our bodies where bone is in contact with soft tissue, in the juice and milk package material, computers components, pharmaceuticals etc. The functionality of these materials often depends on the diffusion of molecules/liquids across interfaces. The aims of this project are to characterize diffusion across interfaces as well as the microstructure at the interface, understand the mechanisms behind the diffusion across the interfaces and to develop routes for design of interfaces with controlled diffusion properties. Several different techniques will this be used for the characterization of diffusion across interfaces, ranging from macroscopic characterization with e.g. the diffusion cell method or quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to microscopic characterization with for instance Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching (FRAP). Characterization of material and interface microstructures will be performed at different length scales by microscopy techniques such as Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The experimental work will be integrated with theory and mathematical models for diffusion across interfaces.
The employment is limited to maximum 5 years and is equivalent to 4 years of research studies in the project. The extra 1 year will be devoted mainly to teaching on Bachelor or Master?s level or equivalent. The teaching part of the PhD work will be spread out during the full time of the employment.
Qualifications
You should be interested in both experimental and theoretical work. We think you have a Master in Engineering (K, Kb, Kf) or similar education. Good knowledge in material and physical chemistry is an advantage. We expect that you work independently and that you are able to carefully plan your work and actively communicate your results. You will also take active part in teaching duties at the department. You must be able to collaborate with others and have a keen and positive attitude. The research results will be disseminated in Swedish and English, and good skills in writing and speaking these languages are therefore valuable.
More information about the project can be given by Anette Larsson on phone 031-772 2763, anette.larsson@chalmers.se , or by Niklas Lorén, SIK, phone 010-5266614, nl@sik.se
