Department of Crop Production Ecology in Uppsala
1 PhD student in the research education subject: Crop Production Science or Biology

Water and nutrient use efficiency in a perennial biomass crop

The subject of the research is biomass production on agricultural land using fast-growing trees, here mostly willow (Salix spp.) grown as Short Rotation Coppice (SRC). Increased efficiency in resource use of crops is an important issue in agricultural research and sustainable development in agriculture. Efficiency of resource use is the ability of a crop to accumulate biomass and yield with as little growth-limiting resources (usually mineral nutrients and water) as possible. There is much evidence that cropping systems with perennial crops, such as willow, can utilize many resources more efficiently than annuals, and commercial systems for the production of biomass with willow SRC are in place in Sweden. An important task within the project is the development of high-throughput methods for the rapid screening of relevant growth and resource economy traits in large mapping populations of willow, and the evaluation of those methods in a pre-breeding context. Traits of special interest are those related to plant water and nutrient economy. Another important task is the improvement of management practice to enhance resource use in willow plantations. The research will be performed in close collaboration with the genetics research group within this project, and parts of the research will be performed in a willow trial established in northern Italy. Your PhD project will focus on developing, evaluating and applying methods for the assessment of water and nutrient use efficiency in biomass plantations of willow (Salix) grown in Sweden and Italy. Your work will include field and possibly also greenhouse experiments, as well as data processing and writing. You will be part of a team of graduate students, postdocs and senior researchers. The PhD project is carried out in collaboration with the SLU department of Plant Biology and Forest Genetics and other SLU departments. The work will be based in Uppsala, but there will be opportunities to pursue part of the PhD studies abroad.

Qualifications
The successful candidate should have a background in biology or agronomy with sound knowledge of plant physiology and ecology, and with interest in agriculture and crop production. Experience of field work is a merit. Good skills in English (both written and oral) is required as well as to communicate (understand and speak), or being willing to learn, Swedish or another Scandinavian language. Particular emphasis will be placed on your personal skills as team player as well as your ability to take initiatives and work independently. You need to have a driving license.
