hela Sverige PhD-student in landscape planning with a focus on ecosystem services provided by residential urban forests
Urban forests contribute to better quality of the living environment and consequently the livelihood of the urban population. Urban forests and trees improve air quality, reduce rain water runoff and mitigate urban heat effects. There is little known about the urban forest located on residential land in Sweden (trees and woody shrubs not owned by municipalities), primarily because this major resource of ecosystem service supply is not included in standard municipal tree inventories and related planning activities.
This PhD research project will use Malmoouml; City as a representative case, and will use GIS to survey residential urban forest and assess their relative ecosystem service contributions. The overall aim is to identify the characteristics of the residential urban forest, and identify what ecosystem services this resource provides. Based on this, the project will study how municipalities can plan and manage towards sustainable ecosystem services provided by the residential urban forests. It is expected that the project will generate a starting platform for municipality-guided monitoring of this abundant resource.
The PhD-study should contribute with theoretical as well as empirically substantiated knowledge on urban tree inventory and data collection, together with knowledge on municipal management regimes.
Kvalifikationer: We are seeking a highly motivated candidate that has an academic background in Landscape Management or Forestry. The candidate should have experience with design of experiments, data stratification, hierarchical cluster analysis and the establishment of permanent sampling plots, together with field data collection in practice.
The candidate should be a team player with good written as well as oral communication skills for scientific communication (in English), and connection to the wider public. Experience from working in a university environment and previous scientific publication is considered extra merit.
