PhD position in Insect Chemical Ecology

Description
Animals, plants and microorganisms use chemical signals to obtain information about their environment and to communicate with each other. We are now recruiting a PhD student who will investigate pheromones, plant- and microbial odours as chemosensory signals that influence the behaviour and ecology of the spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii. Drosophila suzukii is a serious pest on soft-skinned fruit that less than three years after detection in Sweden is commonly found in fruit and berry plantations. Our research efforts are directed towards both basic and applied research. The work includes chemical, behavioural, physiological and molecular studies, depending on the educational background of the candidate.
Environment
The Chemical Ecology Units (Horticulture, Agriculture and Disease Vectors) within the Department of Plant Protection Biology at SLU Alnarp comprise ca. 30 researchers and students studying insect olfaction. Drosophila suzukii and other fruit-living insects are in the focus of our research at the Chemical Ecology Horticulture Unit. In addition to insect pheromones we study fruit and microbial chemical signals and their role in insect physiology, ecology and evolution. We combine behavioural assays, physiological recordings, chemical and molecular techniques to study insect chemical ecology. The PhD study will be closely linked to ongoing projects.

Previous work experience with insect pests and especially with D.suzukii is a merit.
You are fluent in spoken and written English.
You are highly motivated and eager to contribute to the scientific output of the lab.
You have the ambition to pursue a scientific career.
