Economics and Energy Markets of the Future
The Department of Forest Economics at the Swedish Agricultural University (SLU), Umeoaring;, seeks a PhD student in Economics, with a focus on Energy Economics in a broad sense. We seek a candidate who is interested in issues related broadly to energy markets, to work on a wide range of topics on both the demand and the supply sideonbsp;with a focus ononbsp;rigorousonbsp;empirical approaches,onbsp;and in a (largely but not exclusively) Nordic setting. Topics of research interest include: aspects of demand flexibility for both retail and transmission sides; instrument choice in green energy subsidies and dealing with intermittency; the forests in relation to energy supply, with particular reference to the role of bio-fuels in energy markets and policies. The chosen student is expected to work closely with the supervising group, developing a research agenda and plan based upon the candidateo#39;s interests and those of the supervising group.

The chosen candidate is expected to commence studies between May and August 2018, but the exact start date is negotiable. The position is contracted for a period four years, with progress based upon an annual evaluation of the studentorsquo;s work. The chosen candidate will join an active group of economics-related PhD students at both the Department of Forest Economics at SLU and Umeoaring; Universityo#39;s economics department.

Kvalifikationer: The individual we seek is expected to possess skills and background commensurate with the requirements for enrolment in a rigorous economics PhD program, including: strong quantitative (mathematical/statistical) background; exposure to rigorous microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics (preferably at the Master's level); an ability to work intellectually independently and in small groups. We emphasise that a willingness to engage in independent research activity is required. A Master?s degree in economics or allied fields (e.g. statistics, mathematics, agricultural economics or a strong quantitative inter-disciplinary field) will be required. Strong interest in energy-related questions, as evidenced for instance by the motivation provided in the cover letter and prior research activity (if any), is also a pre-requisite. Proficiency in written and oral English is required, with an ability to write for academic audiences. Prior expertise in empirical work in economics and an ability to use appropriate tools and packages for econometric analysis (e.g. stata, R, or Matlab), allied with a strong background in econometrics/statistics (e.g. coursework at the Master?s level), will strengthen the application.

Application requirements: The application should include: (i) a cover letter (no more than 2 A4 pages), describing your research interests and qualifications, and motivating your fit for the advertised position; (ii) a complete CV (including details regarding skills in statistical packages and with programming knowledge), publication list (if any), and contact details; (iii) PDF files of transcripts/Marks sheets (Bachelor?s and Master? degree); (v) PDF files evidencing research activity (if any), preferably independent (e.g. Master?s Thesis/Essay, publications); (vi) the names and contact addresses of at least two academic references; and (vii) Supplemental relevant information (e.g. results from standardised tests, e.g. GRE/TOEFL).

For applicants from non-Nordic and non-native-English speaking settings whose Master?s degree studies were not carried out in English, proof of proficiency in English e.g. via standardised tests (TOEFL/IELTS) is recommended to be submitted.
